Ramazan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and commemorates, among other things, the revelation of the first Koran verses to the prophet Muhammad. It’s a time of fasting, when Muslims refrain from letting anything pass their lips, whether it be food, smoke, chewing gum or liquids of any kind between the hours of sunrise and sunset.

But Ramadan is also a time of great excitement, filling the Istanbul events calendar with jubilant festivities bringing the city to life when the sun goes down

During the Holy month of Ramazan the ancient Hippodrome area is lined with food and drink stalls and people come to enjoy a meal after dusk. The Hippodrome turns into a giant block party upon sundown (when practicing Muslims break their fast). There's plenty of food and merchandise.

It's a great opportunity to see real people.
